I have been fortunate enough to serve on many personnel interview committees. I've interviewed candidates for teaching positions, club advisors, and administrative positions.
As a music teacher of various grade levels, I create pullout lesson schedules within the daily schedules of the various buildings. This requires me to have a firm understanding of daily bell schedules and building calendars.
This is a list of question I compiled to ask of candidates for a middle school band director postion.
When my school first changed to a modified rotating block schedule, scheduling lessons within the parameters of students missing each class period just once per marking period and avoiding lab conflicts was especially challenging. I found a way to schedule lessons effectively then trained my colleagues to do the same.
Throughout my years as a multi-level music teacher, I have worked with my colleagues to utilize teaching space effectively. To keep everyone informed of our respective teaching space availability, I created charts such as this one that indicates when each of the school's ensembles rehearse.
Music staff's teaching assignments tend to change each year due to changing job descriptions and master schedules. I created and shared this chart with departmental colleagues and building administrators to provide a visual representation of everyone's whereabouts throughout the week.
One year we had 10 music teachers teaching in only 7 rooms at the middle school. I created this spreadsheet file to plan for an effective use of the available rooms. The first tab is an overview of the room usage while the others show each teacher's schedule and room usage.
