Diversity offers wonderful opportunities to share varying experiences and perspectives. However, students of diverse backgrounds often experience obstacles that other students do not. I have committed myself to removing these barriers. This section of my portfolio includes examples of assistance I have provided as President of the North Jersey School Music Association, as an administrative intern, and as a public school teacher.
In my administrative internship, I analyzed NJASK data among student subgroups and identified Title I students who scored "Partially Proficient". I helped to create this intervention program and communicated with the families via this multi-lingual invitation.
NJSMA surveyed rural/urban directors to identify obstacles that prevent their students from auditioning for the Region ensembles. Fees and transportation were identified so NJSMA has now implemented a program to waive fees and provide transportation for all Title I students who apply.
NJSMA recognizes that some students live in households where English is not the primary language. Therefore, we are now making our info. available in both English and Spanish. to eliminate a potential language barrier and encourage all students to participate. This is an example of a bilingual application.
In my district, Title I students are eligible to borrow district-owned instruments to reduce financial barriers to participation. The families sign a contract to assume responsibility for the instrument. I collaborated with a world language teacher to translate this document for our Spanish-speaking families.
